15 September 2010 - Philippine Consul General in Guangzhou Joselito A. Jimeno met with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) officials on September 8 to prepare for the Philippine participation at the 16th Asian Games (Asiad).
The Asiad will be held in Guangzhou on November 12 to 27. The POC delegation was headed by 16th Asian Games Philippine Deputy Chef de Mission Moying Martelino. During the meeting, Mr. Martelino furnished the Consulate the list of the athletes approved by the POC to compete.
The list currently contains 160 athletes, and the number could go up to 200, Mr. Martelino said.
The POC officials added that the Philippines is expected to win gold medals in billiards, considering that Filipino cue artists are considered "world-class".
Another athlete expected to win the gold medal is long jumper Marestella Torres, who claimed the top prize during the last Asian Athletics Championship.
Medals are also expected from taekwondo, boxing, and other combative sports.
The POC officials also mentioned other Philippine Government officials from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) shall also be part in the official delegation to the Asiad. These include PSC Chairman Ricardo R. Garcia, Commissioners Salvador Andrada and Joaquin Loyzaga, and Executive Director Geraldine Bernardo.
They also mentioned that judoka John Baylon and weight-lifter Hidilyn Diaz will participate in the torch relay on November 10.
